"Pop art is neither abstract nor realistic, though it has contacts in both directions. The core of pop art is at neither frontier. It is, essentially, an art about signs and sign-systems." - Lawrence Alloway

ÆQAI (pronounced 'A' as in 'dAte ' and 'qai ' as in 'sKY' ) is a Cincinnati-based e-journal for critical thinking, review and reflective prose on contemporary visual art. The word 'ÆQAI' is a mispelling from Livy's text for the 'Aequi.' The Aequi were the peoples that the Cincinnatus of early ancient Rome conquered upon his famous brief tenure as a 'temporary' dictator. The term for our ongoing news and reviews section, ADUMBRATIONES, means 'sketches' or 'outlines,' like the english word 'adumbrate.'

The art critic is an art lover. All art communities benefit greatly from the presence of art criticism that is 'informed, spirited, soulful' (Charlie Rose). ÆQAI seeks to fill the void in the Greater Cincinnati region for this kind of critical discourse. We hope that this stimulates the consumers of art to appreciate all exhibitions and events - not just those discussed - in a more profound fashion while energizing the creators and exhibitors to produce the best possible works and shows. Please note that we are not a 'blog.' The monthly writing here is planned in our meetings and represents content both edited and reviewed.

If you are an individual or organization interested in advertising and/or donating funds, please visit our advertise/support page. If you have any questions, you are welcome to send an email to the editor below.

If you are a writer, ÆQAI is always interested in new thinkers joining our team or contributing guest articles. We meet on the respective ides of each month to share ideas, peer review articles and plan for future projects. Please send an email introducing yourself and include samples of your writing.
