Jerry Stein

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati Evening College, Stein won such awards as "Cincinnati's Best" honor from Cincinnati Magazine for his arts coverage in 1992 and the 1994 Itching Heart Coalition Arlene Gibeau Award bestowed by Covington's Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center for "a career devoted to promoting regional arts."
With his Post colleague music critic Mary Ellyn Hutton, the team won journalism awards for their series State of the Arts and Cincinnati Arts Renaissance, both of which surveyed the present and future health of Greater Cincinnati arts institutions.
His proudest professional achievement was testifying for the defense in the landmark 1990 Robert Mapplethorpe trial. The Contemporary Arts Center and its director, Dennis Barrie, were charged with pandering obscenity after exhibiting Mapplethorpe's erotic photographs. Both Barrie and the museum were acquitted of all charges six months later.
