“Moonlit Dance Series”
Tori’s statement:
The story of the horse has a long legacy in art, mythology, war, literature and more. These images poetically express the qualities a horse embodies; wildness, freedom, wisdom, power, connection, spirituality, beauty and honor the memory of the unique mark horses have made on the hearts and lives of humans.
My personal 12-year long relationship with a rescued racehorse has led me into the unique world of the horse. The horse lives in a highly intuitive world of the senses, a world we don’t often access. To enter their world, it is best to be calm, centered and free of tension. The images are visual poetic offerings honoring the beauty and uniqueness of the horse. I am grateful for the opportunity to honor this remarkable creature through my art. A portion of the proceeds from this work supports Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary in Lompoc CA.
My love of photography began in grade school working with a pinhole camera and watching the images come to life in the darkroom. I eventually learned to photograph with my grandfather’s Rolleiflex and developed film in a darkroom my brother built in our basement when I was 12 years old. My brother and mother, both professional photographers, influenced me in later years. I have a long background in garden design where I developed an eye for color, shape line, texture and form.
I have had a love of animals from a very young age and later in life developed a love of horses. I am inspired by their power, beauty, grace and the spiritual connection they provide to humans. They are great teachers, through them I have learned many invaluable lessons about life. I photograph horses in the wild, at wild horse sanctuaries in the US as well as other locations around the world. I donate 10% of proceeds from sales of my work to organizations involved in the protection of and education about the wild horse populations in the western US. Through imagery of wild horses, I hope to educate and inspire others to taken an interest in their plight. Pressure from ranching, invasive plant species, mineral and water rights, land development, government and conservation put pressure on their ability to remain free on our shared public lands.
