“Capturing Stillness” – artist statement
The Great North of Canada is composed of an infinite and inaccessible number of desert spaces. The smallness of Self within the infinitely great is a call to introspection. The serenity and silence of the place reveal a disturbing and giddy emptiness. Within this space, there is a presence called solitude. Experiencing solitude in an unreachable space, experiencing space with the strictest solitude.
To allow for light and space to gently permeate onto the film, the photographer committed to spending long hours in these extraordinary environments with nothing to do but to contemplate, observe, own, and live the landscape.
Movement is recorded, and stillness captured. Only motionless elements are clearly revealed on the images. Entities in motion within the landscape are either invisible or appear completely blurred. Over time, even the most stable things will come to disappear. Within time, space is the sole element to prevail. A work of contemplation, anticipation, and solitude: an attempt to grasp spaciousness.
Catherine Aboumrad lives and works in Montreal. She received her BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University and has participated in several exhibitions and festivals such as GuatePhoto, the international photography festival in Guatemala, and À Louer, organized by UMA-La Maison de l’Image et de la Photographie. Her work focuses on the demonstration of space, statement of opulence, absence, organization and restriction. In a passive and respectful approach, the landscape offers without intervention.
