Bring Your Family to the Taft Museum of Art to Celebrate the Holidays

November 8th, 2013  |  Published in Announcements

Be swept into the holiday mood when Antique Christmas (November 8, 2013−January 5, 2014) returns to the Taft Museum of Art. Guests can celebrate the festive season with friends and loved ones, while they experience the wonder and joy of antique ornaments, toys, and decorations.

As always, this year’s exhibition features new and unique displays: a Civil War-era Christmas tree; an arrangement of Noah’s Ark and animal toys; a German Nativity pyramid from 1890; an entire tree trimmed in cats and dogs, and another decked only with pink ornaments; a 1950s Christmas display; and a group of rare, vintage dolls from the turn of the twentieth century.

Festive greenery will deck the halls and exterior of the house, and the Dining Room will be set for the holidays with sparkling china, crystal, and silver. The exterior of the historic house will be decorated with garlands and wreaths from Frontgate.

“I’m so pleased that Antique Christmas has become a part of an annual tradition for many families,” says Deborah Emont Scott, Director/CEO, Taft Museum of Art. “The feather trees, delicate glass and paper ornaments offer visitors the chance to experience and appreciate the artistry of craftsmen from earlier generations.”

Christmas-themed magazine covers and calendars from the era during which the Tafts lived in the historic house will also be displayed. Magazines such as Ladies’ Home Journal, Needlecraft, The Saturday Evening Post, and McCall’s will paint a picture of Christmas as it was represented in popular culture from the 1880s through the 1930s. Also featured are holiday-themed calendars, including collectible plates decorated with calendars.

The Lindner Family Café is the perfect place to enjoy lunch, Sunday brunch or hot chocolate with friends and loved ones during the holidays. To view the menu, visit www.taftmuseum.org.

With a number of programs and events, including talks with the collectors, and a performance by the Young Professionals’ Choral Collective, the Taft is a great family destination during the festive season.

During November and December, the Museum will be open on Tuesdays.
