Even in the dead of summer, in this post-COVID period, there are still art shows around of significance, and we bring you those in the new June/July issue of Aeqai, which has just posted.

Chris Carter’s superb review of Cincinnati photographer Kent Krugh’s new photographs at Off Ludlow Gallery in Clifton is a real in-depth look at the artist’s interest in Surrealism.  Cynthia Kukla reviews the just opened “Monuments Men” show at the Cincinnati Art Museum, praising those paintings that were available for travel, and noting how CAM used works from its permanent collections to fill in for those works not available from German museums at this time.  It’s an exciting exhibition, and Kukla tells us just enough about the Monuments Men themselves (one of whom was late Cincinnati interior designer Walter Farmer) to round out her review.  Ekin Erkan reviews a retrospective of work by Nikki Saint Phalle at MoMa’s PS l in New York; the artist was an early feminist, as well as self-taught, and particularly interested in public spaces for her work.

Laura Hobson’s profile of Cincinnati artist and activist Robert Harris is one of her best profiles; Harris was one of the founders  of Cincinnati’s Arts Consortium, which was in The West End for decades and also an advocate for those with physical challenges/disabilities. At 75, Harris is one of Cincinnati’s true treasures, and we’re pleased to feature him and his work in  this issue.  (Hobson just won

third prize, too, in the state-wide Ohio Cleveland Press Club’s annual jurying of online features, for which we offer congratulations; the article was originally published in Aeqai).

Karen Chambers takes a penetrating look at prints by Kevin Harris and Saad Ghosn at The Indian Hill Gallery, while Will Newman reviews work from 2021’s SOS Art show, created by Saad Ghosn, as well.

Josh Beckelhimer looks at a five-year anniversary show of of LA artists at Hauser & Wirth in LA–with astute insights into the environmental work, in particular–and Annabel Osberg reviews work by Cindy Ji Hye Kim at Francois Ghebaly in LA.  We also note with great pride that Osberg is now writing reviews for “Art in America”, “ArtForum” and “The Financial Times”.

I offer two book reviews this month, “Mayflies” by Andrew O’Hagan, and “Letters to Camondo” by Edmund de Waal.
